Canberra, July 2: Australia and Japan celebrated another milestone in their longstanding partnership as Debra Hazelton was formally presented with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, one of Japan’s highest honors awarded to foreign nationals for exceptional contributions to bilateral relations.

The conferment ceremony was hosted by Japanese Ambassador Kazuhiro Suzuki and attended by Japan’s State Minister, senior Australian government officials, and both current and former Australian ambassadors to Japan. The gathering recognized Hazelton’s longstanding efforts to strengthen cooperation and mutual understanding between the two Indo-Pacific partners.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Suzuki described it as a privilege to host the ceremony, noting that the award reflects Hazelton’s significant role in advancing ties between Japan and Australia across multiple sectors. The event brought together diplomatic representatives and distinguished guests to celebrate years of collaboration that have reinforced one of the region’s most important strategic partnerships.

The Order of the Rising Sun, established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji, is among Japan’s most distinguished decorations. It is conferred on individuals who have made outstanding contributions in areas such as international relations, public service, cultural exchange, academic cooperation, and the promotion of friendship with Japan.

Hazelton’s recognition highlights the growing depth of Japan–Australia relations, which have expanded well beyond traditional diplomacy. The two nations now cooperate closely in trade, investment, clean energy, scientific research, education, technology, and regional security, making their partnership a cornerstone of stability in the Indo-Pacific.

The presence of senior officials from both governments underscored the importance placed on maintaining strong bilateral engagement. The ceremony also reflected the value of people-to-people connections, with individual leadership continuing to play an essential role in strengthening trust between the two countries.

In recent years, Japan and Australia have further enhanced their cooperation through strategic agreements, economic initiatives, and shared commitments to a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. Awards such as the Order of the Rising Sun recognize those whose work has helped transform diplomatic goodwill into enduring partnerships.

The ceremony concluded with tributes to Hazelton’s contributions, celebrating her efforts to foster closer understanding and cooperation between Japan and Australia. The honor serves not only as recognition of past achievements but also as a symbol of the enduring friendship between the two nations and their shared commitment to future collaboration.
