Australia Honors Debra Hazelton with Japan’s Prestigious Order of the Rising Sun

Canberra, July 2: Australia and Japan celebrated another milestone in their longstanding partnership as Debra Hazelton was formally presented with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, one of Japan’s highest honors awarded to foreign nationals for exceptional contributions to bilateral relations.

The conferment ceremony was hosted by Japanese Ambassador Kazuhiro Suzuki and attended by Japan’s State Minister, senior Australian government officials, and both current and former Australian ambassadors to Japan. The gathering recognized Hazelton’s longstanding efforts to strengthen cooperation and mutual understanding between the two Indo-Pacific partners.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Suzuki described it as a privilege to host the ceremony, noting that the award reflects Hazelton’s significant role in advancing ties between Japan and Australia across multiple sectors. The Order of the Rising Sun, established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji, is among Japan’s most distinguished decorations.
