India and Australia Elevate Strategic Partnership with Landmark Agreements During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Australia has marked a significant milestone in the rapidly expanding India–Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The two Indo-Pacific democracies unveiled a series of landmark agreements designed to strengthen cooperation across defence, maritime security, energy, civil nuclear collaboration, cybersecurity, critical technologies, and resilient supply chains. The outcomes reflect a shared vision of ensuring regional stability, economic resilience, and sustainable growth in an increasingly complex global environment.
One of the most important achievements of the visit is the Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation (JDDSC). This declaration establishes a stronger framework for defence collaboration by expanding military engagement, intelligence cooperation, defence technology partnerships, logistics coordination, and joint exercises. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to preserving a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific while enhancing their ability to respond to emerging regional security challenges.
Complementing the defence declaration is the Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap (MSCR), which aims to deepen cooperation across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The roadmap focuses on maritime domain awareness, coordinated naval activities, information sharing, disaster response, anti-piracy efforts, and safeguarding critical sea lanes that support global commerce. By strengthening naval interoperability and surveillance capabilities, India and Australia seek to reinforce maritime stability throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
Energy security emerged as another cornerstone of the visit through the India–Australia Joint Statement on Energy Security. The agreement promotes long-term cooperation in renewable energy, hydrogen, critical minerals, battery technologies, clean energy innovation, and resilient energy supply chains. Australia’s abundant natural resources and India’s growing clean-energy market create opportunities for mutually beneficial investment and technological collaboration while supporting global climate objectives.
A notable development was the finalisation of the Administrative Arrangement under the India–Australia Civil Nuclear Agreement. This step operationalises greater cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, streamlines regulatory implementation, and facilitates Australia’s supply of uranium to India under international safeguards. The arrangement strengthens India’s long-term clean energy strategy while reinforcing confidence in bilateral nuclear cooperation.
The leaders also launched the Australia–India Partnership for Cyber, Critical Technologies and Supply Chains (PACTS). This initiative aims to enhance collaboration in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, semiconductor ecosystems, telecommunications, trusted digital infrastructure, and resilient supply chains. The partnership seeks to reduce vulnerabilities in critical industries while encouraging innovation, research, and investment in next-generation technologies that will shape the future global economy.
Beyond the signed agreements, both governments reiterated their commitment to accelerating trade negotiations, expanding investment flows, increasing educational exchanges, promoting research collaboration, and encouraging greater business-to-business engagement. Leaders from both countries emphasized that India and Australia are natural partners capable of driving economic prosperity while contributing to peace, stability, and rules-based governance across the Indo-Pacific.
