The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has launched a public participation campaign to mark its 59th Anniversary, inviting people from across the region to contribute their personal hopes, reflections, and aspirations through short video messages. The initiative aims to celebrate ASEAN’s journey while giving citizens an opportunity to help shape the conversation about the organization’s future.
The campaign encourages participants to record a brief video expressing what ASEAN means to them, how regional cooperation has influenced their lives, and what they hope the organization will achieve in the years ahead. By highlighting diverse voices from across Southeast Asia, the project seeks to showcase the shared values and common aspirations that unite the region’s people.
Individuals interested in participating are asked to submit their videos via email with the subject line “ASEAN59_Voices from ASEAN” before the submission deadline of 22 July 2026. Organizers have announced that selected entries will be compiled into a commemorative video collage to celebrate the anniversary under the theme “Our Shared Future.”
The initiative reflects ASEAN’s commitment to people-centered regional cooperation. While governments remain central to policy-making, the organization increasingly recognizes the importance of hearing directly from students, professionals, entrepreneurs, artists, community leaders, and young people whose experiences contribute to the region’s identity.
Since its establishment in 1967, ASEAN has evolved into one of the world’s most significant regional organizations. Through cooperation in economic development, trade, education, disaster management, environmental protection, public health, and cultural exchange, the association has worked to strengthen stability and prosperity among its member states.
Digital engagement campaigns such as this anniversary project demonstrate how regional organizations are embracing technology to connect more closely with the public. Video storytelling enables participants to communicate personal experiences, cultural perspectives, and future ambitions in a way that transcends borders and languages, fostering a stronger sense of regional belonging.
The anniversary campaign also highlights the importance of youth participation. As Southeast Asia continues to experience rapid economic growth and technological transformation, younger generations are expected to play a leading role in addressing future challenges, including climate change, digital innovation, sustainable development, and regional resilience.
By inviting public contributions, ASEAN hopes to create a collective narrative that reflects both the diversity and unity of its member countries. Every submitted story has the potential to illustrate how cooperation across borders can improve lives, strengthen communities, and build mutual understanding among the region’s hundreds of millions of people.
Although only a selection of videos will appear in the final anniversary production, the campaign emphasizes that every contribution represents a valuable expression of civic engagement and regional pride. The initiative encourages citizens to see themselves not only as residents of individual nations but also as active participants in the broader ASEAN community.
As ASEAN celebrates nearly six decades of regional partnership, the anniversary campaign serves as a reminder that the organization’s future will be shaped not only by governments and institutions but also by the hopes, ideas, and aspirations of the people it represents. Through shared voices and shared purpose, the region continues its journey toward a more connected, peaceful, innovative, and prosperous future.
