Eutelsat, the world’s third-largest satellite operator by revenue, has made a significant move in expanding its satellite communications network. On Sunday, the company launched 20 new satellites using SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base at 0513 GMT. This marks Eutelsat’s first satellite launch since the historic merger of France’s Eutelsat and Britain’s OneWeb in September last year.

Eutelsat’s CEO, Eva Berneke, in a recent interview with Reuters, emphasized the importance of this launch for the company’s growth strategy. “This is the first OneWeb launch of satellites since the merger,” Berneke said. “We will be launching more satellites over the coming years.”

The Paris-based Eutelsat, now operating a constellation of over 600 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, aims to cater to broadcasters, telecom companies, and radio stations globally. This recent launch is part of Eutelsat’s ongoing efforts to solidify its position in the rapidly evolving satellite communications industry.

Strengthening Ties with the Telecom Industry

Berneke highlighted the growing role of satellites in the larger telecommunications ecosystem, acknowledging that while satellite communication remains a niche, it is becoming increasingly integral to the overall connectivity infrastructure.

A New Chapter for Satellite Communications

The merger of Eutelsat and OneWeb marked a turning point for the satellite industry in Europe, combining the expertise and technological capabilities of two major players. The company’s focus on LEO satellites places it in direct competition with other space and communications giants, but its partnership with SpaceX, particularly for satellite launches, signals its commitment to maintaining technological advancement and expanding global reach.

Eutelsat’s ambitious plan to continue launching satellites over the coming years is expected to significantly enhance its global communication services. These new satellites will bolster its capacity to offer faster, more reliable connectivity for its diverse range of clients, from telecommunications firms to media broadcasters, making the company a vital player in the future of global digital communication.

This latest launch represents not only the success of the Eutelsat-OneWeb merger but also the broader trend of increasing collaboration between satellite operators and private space companies like SpaceX, reshaping the global satellite landscape.
