The Tripura government has taken a significant step toward strengthening its rural economy and promoting sustainable animal husbandry by identifying ten villages for development under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission. This initiative is designed to enhance the cattle population and improve the overall productivity of animal husbandry in the state.
Chief Minister Manik Saha made this announcement on Friday during the Mukhyamantri Prani Palak Samman Nidhi event at Pragna Bhavan, Agartala. Highlighting the importance of the Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD) in fostering economic growth, CM Saha reiterated the state government’s commitment to working in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of empowering farmers through better livestock management and increased production.
Prioritizing Animal Husbandry for Economic Growth
CM Saha emphasized the central role of the ARDD in creating employment opportunities and driving economic development. He pointed out that the state’s initiatives are aligned with the national focus on animal husbandry as a key driver for improving farmers’ livelihoods.
“The ARDD plays an essential role in the welfare of farmers and rural communities. Prime Minister Modi has given special attention to animal husbandry, and the Tripura government is fully committed to achieving the goals set by him,” CM Saha said.
He further explained that while the production of milk, meat, and eggs has increased, there is still a need to expand efforts to meet growing demands. He encouraged beneficiaries and other stakeholders to adopt animal husbandry as a sustainable livelihood option, which could significantly boost rural incomes.
Improved Veterinary Infrastructure and Services
The Chief Minister also shed light on the progress made in developing veterinary infrastructure across the state. Tripura currently boasts 16 veterinary hospitals, 65 veterinary dispensaries, and 460 veterinary sub-centres, ensuring accessible healthcare for livestock in rural areas.
In addition to infrastructure, the ARDD has been actively working on animal health initiatives, including vaccination drives, disease prevention programs, and treatment facilities for livestock and poultry. These measures aim to protect livestock from illnesses and enhance productivity, contributing to the long-term success of animal husbandry ventures.
Rashtriya Gokul Mission: Aiming for Indigenous Breed Development
The ten villages identified under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission will focus on developing and conserving indigenous cattle breeds. The mission seeks to improve genetic diversity and productivity while ensuring the preservation of native breeds. By implementing modern techniques and scientific practices, the initiative aims to create a robust framework for cattle rearing in the state.
Boosting Rural Livelihoods and Food Security
CM Saha underscored the need to increase the supply of animal-based products such as milk, meat, and eggs, which are vital for both food security and economic stability. He highlighted the government’s role in encouraging rural participation in animal husbandry and creating an ecosystem that supports small-scale farmers and entrepreneurs.
Looking Ahead
The state government’s decision to prioritize animal husbandry and the development of indigenous cattle breeds reflects its commitment to fostering rural development. With the Rashtriya Gokul Mission paving the way, Tripura is expected to witness significant growth in its livestock sector, boosting the livelihoods of countless rural families.
This initiative not only aligns with the broader goals of agricultural development but also establishes Tripura as a key contributor to India’s livestock economy, ensuring a more prosperous and self-reliant future for its people.
