Mumbai, May 25 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the South Konkan districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg following the formation of a depression system in the region. This weather disturbance, currently positioned between Ratnagiri and Dapoli, has resulted in intense rainfall, thunderstorm activity, and strong winds.
IMD scientist Shubhangi A. Bhute stated that the depression is causing “heavy to very heavy rainfall” across several parts of Maharashtra. The department has also warned residents and authorities in the coastal areas, urging fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea due to dangerous marine conditions.
“The depression has already crossed the area between Ratnagiri and Dapoli,” said the IMD in an official statement. “Given the current trajectory and intensity, a red alert has been declared for Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, signaling the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall in certain pockets of these districts.”
In addition to Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, Raigad district has been placed under an orange alert, indicating a high probability of significant rainfall. Meanwhile, Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts are under a yellow warning, with the forecast predicting moderate to heavy rain showers.
The IMD has also extended a warning to fishermen along the Maharashtra and Gujarat coastlines, stressing that sea conditions are currently hazardous and unsafe for any marine activity due to the ongoing weather system.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged residents in the affected areas to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain alert to further updates from the meteorological department.
