Lucknow, June 24, 2025 – The monsoon has made a dramatic and destructive entry into Uttar Pradesh, drenching vast stretches of the state and triggering a cascade of weather-related disruptions. From fatal lightning strikes to damaged infrastructure and flooded streets, the downpour has brought life to a standstill in many areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in 20 districts, alongside a yellow alert for light rain and lightning in 10 others. The rainfall, which began intensifying on Sunday, has moved from eastern parts of the state to the west, bringing varying degrees of impact.

In Jalaun, a tragic lightning incident resulted in the death of seven goats. Lalitpur recorded the highest rainfall so far at 132 mm. Cities like Lucknow, Bijnor, and Jhansi faced flash floods and waterlogging. In Bijnor, the rain was so intense that streets turned into rivers, washing away local goods and vegetables from market stalls.

Agriculture has taken a severe hit. In Basti, a breach in the Saryu canal near Athdeura village flooded over 50 bighas of farmland, causing major crop losses. Meanwhile, Jhansi experienced over two feet of water accumulation on major roads within an hour.

In a rare sight, residents of Raksa village in Jhansi spotted golden-hued frogs, traditionally seen as a sign of abundant rainfall. In Agra, a crocodile emerged from the Chambal River into a nearby village, later rescued by the forest department.

In Pilibhit, part of a bridge collapsed into a canal, prompting swift action from the irrigation department.

Authorities have advised people in the affected districts to remain alert, avoid flooded areas, and follow local advisories as the monsoon continues its vigorous spread.
