India has emerged as a shining example in the global fight against child mortality and vaccine-preventable diseases. With a series of robust health initiatives and targeted interventions, the country has demonstrated extraordinary progress in child immunization and maternal health, drawing worldwide praise.
A major milestone is the sharp decline in the proportion of children who have not received any routine vaccines, known as “zero-dose children.” As per the latest data, this figure has dropped from 0.11% in 2023 to an estimated 0.06% in 2024. This notable achievement has been lauded in the 2024 report of the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME), reflecting India’s unwavering commitment to universal immunization access.
India’s accomplishments in reducing mortality are equally significant. According to the UN-MMEIG (2000–2023) report, the country’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) now stands at 80 per one lakh live births—a dramatic 86% decrease since 1990, compared to a global decline of just 48%. Additionally, the under-five mortality rate has dropped by 78% in India, significantly ahead of the global average reduction of 61%. The neonatal mortality rate also declined by 70%, outpacing the global average of 54% during the same period.
These improvements are not coincidental but the result of consistent, large-scale public health efforts. The “Zero Dose Implementation Plan 2024” has been rolled out in 143 districts across 11 states, focusing on regions with the highest number of unvaccinated children. Through this focused strategy, India aims to close the immunization gap completely.
Programs such as Mission Indradhanush, especially since its intensification in 2017, have been pivotal. In collaboration with state governments, it has ensured vaccinations for over 5.46 crore children and 1.32 crore pregnant women. These efforts have strengthened immunization coverage and reinforced the nation’s healthcare infrastructure. Regular campaigns such as National Immunization Days (NIDs) and Sub-National Immunization Days (SNIDs) have played a crucial role in maintaining India’s polio-free status since 2014.
India now records antigen-wise immunization rates higher than global averages, showcasing the scale, efficiency, and inclusivity of its vaccine delivery system. Given its vast population, India’s health accomplishments are even more commendable and stand as a model for nations grappling with high numbers of zero-dose children.
India’s success in transforming child health indicators illustrates the power of policy-driven health strategies, grassroots implementation, and sustained political commitment. It is not only a national victory but a beacon of hope for the global health community striving to protect every child’s right to a healthy start in life.
