Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh – June 2025: Uttar Pradesh has achieved a major milestone in public health by gaining international recognition for its transformative nutrition initiatives. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Cindy McCain recently applauded the state’s efforts, calling them a model that other nations can emulate in their fight against malnutrition.

This global acknowledgment comes as the state prepares to establish the International Centre of Excellence in Food & Nutrition, a landmark project that aims to position Uttar Pradesh as a hub for nutritional research, innovation, and capacity building. The Centre will support not only national priorities but also aid neighboring countries by offering tested, scalable solutions in food security and child nutrition.

At the core of the state’s success is its Take-Home Ration (THR) initiative, which currently reaches over 72 lakh beneficiaries, including children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. The program focuses on providing nutritional supplements at the household level to ensure early childhood development and maternal health.

A unique strength of the initiative lies in its community-based implementation, primarily driven by women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs). These SHGs have been instrumental in producing, distributing, and managing the THR scheme, thereby not only increasing its efficiency but also empowering women economically and socially.

Uttar Pradesh’s model emphasizes inclusivity, grassroots participation, and data-driven management—factors that have helped it gain credibility on a global platform.

The commendation from the WFP and the upcoming Centre of Excellence mark a turning point in India’s nutrition journey. Uttar Pradesh is not only leading at the state level but also shaping international discourse, standing as a beacon of progress in the mission to eradicate malnutrition and build healthier, stronger communities worldwide.
