India Showcases SDG Progress on Statistics Day, Highlights Major Gains in Welfare, Environment, and Digital Access

New Delhi, India – June 29, 2025 — Marking the 19th Statistics Day, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the 2025 edition of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Progress Reports, underscoring India’s achievements in advancing inclusive development, green energy, and digital empowerment.
At the heart of this release is the “Sustainable Development Goals – National Indicator Framework (NIF) Progress Report, 2025,” which evaluates progress on 17 SDGs through 284 national indicators. The framework, developed in collaboration with stakeholders, continues to guide evidence-based planning and policy formulation.
Complementary publications — the Data Snapshot and the updated National Indicator Framework — offer concise summaries and accessible data insights, all publicly available via MoSPI’s official platform.
Key findings from the 2025 Progress Report include:
Social Security: Coverage expanded from 22% (2016) to 64.3% in 2025.
Agriculture: Per-worker Gross Value Added rose from ₹61,247 (2015-16) to ₹94,110 (2024-25).
Drinking Water Access: Rural coverage reached 99.62%, up from 94.57%.
Renewable Energy: Share grew to 22.13%, with per capita capacity more than doubling to 156.31 watts.
Waste Management: Processing rate climbed from 17.97% to 80.7%, with over 3,000 recycling plants now operational.
Entrepreneurship: Recognized startups surged from 453 (2016) to 34,293 (2024).
Income Equality: Gini index values dropped, showing improved equity in both urban and rural spending.
Carbon Efficiency: Emissions intensity fell 36% compared to 2005 benchmarks.
Digital Inclusion: Internet subscriptions tripled to 954.40 million (2024).
Forests: National forest cover edged up to 21.76% by 2023.
