New Delhi, India – June 29, 2025 — As online scams continue to rise, the Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit has issued a detailed advisory aimed at helping citizens recognize and avoid fraudulent websites. The alert, widely shared through PIB’s verified digital platforms, carries a clear warning: “Spotting a fake site is easier than you think. Don’t get trapped online!”

With phishing scams becoming increasingly sophisticated—often disguised as official government programs or irresistible giveaways—the PIB has outlined simple yet effective tips to stay protected in the digital landscape.

Key signs of a suspicious website include:

Scrutinize the Web Address: Always check for “https://” in the URL, which signifies a secure connection. Fake sites often omit the “s” or use misspelled domains that closely mimic legitimate ones.

Look for the Padlock Icon: A padlock symbol in the address bar is a quick indicator of security. Absence of this symbol is a red flag—never input sensitive data on unsecured pages.

Review Contact and ‘About Us’ Sections: Authentic sites provide verified contact details, including email IDs, phone numbers, and office addresses. Vague or missing information should raise immediate suspicion.

Watch Out for Excessive Pop-Ups: A barrage of pop-ups or clickbait ads is often linked to malicious content. Exit such websites without engaging further.

Question Unrealistic Promises: Offers like “Get a free laptop today” or “Apply for a government job instantly” are classic bait techniques. PIB urges users to stay cautious and avoid falling for flashy claims.

This initiative by PIB Fact Check is part of an ongoing campaign to boost cyber hygiene and digital awareness across India. As more individuals rely on the internet for education, work, and services, understanding these warning signs is critical for protecting both personal information and financial security.

Citizens are reminded to cross-verify any offer or scheme via official government portals before taking action. Staying informed is the first step toward staying safe online.
