Nepal Jolted by Two Earthquakes in Quick Succession; Experts Highlight Shallow Depth as Key Concern

Kathmandu, Nepal – Nepal experienced two earthquakes in less than 24 hours, raising concerns among residents and seismologists alike. The tremors, one measuring magnitude 3.9 and the other 4.2, occurred on Sunday and Monday respectively, with both being relatively shallow, a factor that amplifies their potential for impact.
The first earthquake, a magnitude 4.2 temblor, struck on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at 2:19:05 PM IST. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported its location at 29.35 N latitude and 81.94 E longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers.
Just hours later, on Monday, June 30, 2025, at 8:24:21 AM IST, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake further rattled the region. This second quake was located at 29.24 N latitude and 81.77 E longitude, at a slightly deeper but still shallow depth of 14 kilometers. Both quakes were centered in Nepal.
Seismological experts emphasize that shallow earthquakes pose a greater threat than deeper ones. This is because their energy is released closer to the Earth’s surface, leading to more intense ground shaking and an increased likelihood of damage to infrastructure and potential casualties. Deeper earthquakes, conversely, lose more energy as their seismic waves travel through the Earth’s layers before reaching the surface.
Nepal’s high susceptibility to earthquakes is attributed to its geographical location. The country sits on a convergent boundary where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates are in constant collision. This ongoing geological process generates immense pressure and stress, which is periodically released in the form of earthquakes. Furthermore, Nepal is situated within a subduction zone, where the Indian Plate is actively sliding beneath the Eurasian Plate. This subduction process further intensifies the stress and strain on the Earth’s crust, contributing to the frequent seismic activity in the Himalayan region and the uplift of the mountains themselves.
While the recent quakes were moderate in magnitude, their shallow depth serves as a stark reminder of Nepal’s inherent seismic vulnerability and the critical need for continued preparedness and robust building codes in the region.
