Kolkata Gang-Rape Case: Three Accused Linked to Same Law Institute

June 30, 2025 | Kolkata
In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the legal and academic community in Kolkata, three individuals – identified as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) – have been arrested in connection with a gang-rape incident that took place earlier this month. Preliminary investigations reveal that all three accused are either former students or associated with the staff of the same law institute, raising serious questions about institutional oversight and internal culture.
The incident reportedly occurred on the premises of a private residence not far from the law institution’s main campus. According to police sources, the victim, a young woman who had known one of the accused through mutual academic circles, was allegedly lured under the pretense of a social gathering. What unfolded thereafter was a nightmarish sequence of events involving physical and sexual assault.
Authorities acted swiftly following the victim’s complaint, and all three accused were taken into custody within 48 hours. The police have confirmed that digital evidence and medical reports have strengthened the case against the trio. A senior officer involved in the investigation stated, “This is not only a criminal matter but also a reflection of a larger systemic failure in monitoring student and staff conduct within educational institutions.”
Public outrage has been mounting, with civil society organizations and women’s rights groups staging protests outside the law school and demanding strict action not only against the perpetrators but also against the institution if found negligent in ensuring a safe environment for students.
The law institute in question has released a brief statement expressing “shock and disappointment” over the involvement of individuals previously affiliated with it. The administration has assured full cooperation with the ongoing investigation and has initiated an internal inquiry.
Legal experts say this case could become a landmark in holding educational institutions accountable in cases where their ecosystem indirectly facilitates criminal behavior. If proven guilty, the accused could face severe charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code related to rape, criminal conspiracy, and wrongful confinement.
As the investigation progresses, the city watches closely, hoping justice will be delivered swiftly and fairly—not only for the victim but to send a strong message across campuses nationwide.
