EU Invests €2.8 Billion to Modernize Transport and Strengthen Connected Mobility Across Europe

Brussels, July 2025 — In a significant move to enhance sustainable transportation and integration across the continent, the European Commission has announced a major investment of €2.8 billion aimed at modernizing Europe’s transport infrastructure. The funding will support 94 innovative transport projects, with a strong focus on railways, inland waterways, and maritime routes.
The initiative, launched under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), seeks to bolster the European Union’s goals for green mobility, improved logistics, and a seamless Single Market. By upgrading transport networks and streamlining cross-border connections, the EU aims to reduce travel times, cut carbon emissions, and foster greater economic cohesion among member states.
Key highlights of the funding include the modernization of rail corridors across Central and Eastern Europe, the expansion of inland waterway networks to reduce freight pressure on roads, and the enhancement of maritime connectivity between key coastal regions. These projects not only aim to benefit large metropolitan areas but also focus on connecting underserved regions, ensuring inclusive development.
“This investment marks a strategic milestone for Europe’s mobility and climate goals,” the European Commission said in a statement. “It is about making transport cleaner, faster, and more efficient, while also improving access for people and goods across all EU regions.”
The CEF-backed projects are expected to play a vital role in strengthening the EU’s green transition and boosting the competitiveness of the Single Market by closing infrastructure gaps and promoting intermodality.
With this robust financial commitment, the EU is reinforcing its position as a global leader in sustainable infrastructure and regional integration—laying down the tracks for a future of connected, climate-friendly mobility across Europe.
