UN Chief António Guterres Urges Immediate Action Amid Worsening Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced grave concern over the escalating humanitarian emergency in Gaza, describing the current conditions as “appalling” and warning that the region is on the brink of collapse without swift international intervention.
In a statement shared on social media, Guterres highlighted the critical situation, where the remaining lifelines of survival are being severed due to fuel shortages and ongoing hostilities. According to him, the absence of fuel is endangering essential life-saving services such as neonatal incubators, ambulance operations, and water purification systems. Without an urgent influx of fuel and humanitarian supplies, the crisis could result in further loss of innocent lives.
The Secretary-General emphasized the importance of upholding humanitarian principles and reiterated the UN’s readiness to respond. He noted that the United Nations has a “clear and proven plan” to deliver vital aid to civilians efficiently and safely, no matter where they are located. This plan, he said, is rooted in the organization’s longstanding commitment to neutrality, humanity, and the protection of civilians in conflict zones.
Guterres renewed his call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, along with the unconditional release of all hostages. He stressed that only through an end to violence and the restoration of humanitarian access can the suffering of Gaza’s civilian population be alleviated.
