ASEAN Opens 58th Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur with a Call for Regional Unity

The 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) officially commenced at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Malaysia, marking a significant moment in the region’s diplomatic calendar. The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN, alongside top dignitaries and foreign ministers from across Southeast Asia.

The event began with a keynote address by the Prime Minister of Malaysia and Chair of ASEAN for 2025, The Honourable Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In his speech, he emphasized the need for strengthened regional cooperation, peace, and shared prosperity among ASEAN member states. He highlighted the importance of collective efforts in addressing regional challenges, such as climate change, economic resilience, and geopolitical tensions.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by Malaysia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, The Honourable Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan. He acknowledged the shared commitment of ASEAN members to promoting dialogue, multilateralism, and sustainable development. He also reiterated Malaysia’s readiness to play a proactive role in ASEAN’s strategic agenda moving forward.

This year’s AMM serves as a critical platform for discussing regional security, economic integration, and sustainable development. With the current global landscape facing uncertainty, ASEAN’s unity and shared goals are more crucial than ever.

The presence of high-level leaders at the opening session signals ASEAN’s dedication to maintaining its centrality in the Indo-Pacific and continuing to serve as a bridge for diplomacy, peace, and cooperation.

As ASEAN heads toward its 2025 chairmanship under Malaysia, the meeting sets a hopeful tone for reinforcing regional partnerships and charting a collaborative path forward.
