In a significant diplomatic gesture, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently met with Pope Francis at the Vatican, expressing deep appreciation for the Holy See’s ongoing prayers and support amid Russia’s continued invasion of Ukraine. Describing the dialogue as “very substantive,” President Zelenskyy emphasized the vital role spiritual diplomacy plays in fostering hope and dialogue during times of conflict.

A central point of the discussion was the ongoing initiative to organize a peace summit at the Vatican — an effort aimed at ending hostilities and establishing lasting peace. However, the path to such a dialogue remains obstructed, as Russia continues to reject peace proposals, including this one. Despite these challenges, Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s firm belief in global solidarity and the importance of continuous diplomatic engagement.

Another crucial subject during the meeting was the well-being of Ukrainian children forcibly taken to Russia. President Zelenskyy thanked the Pope for his heartfelt concern and active support in advocating for their return. Several children have already been successfully brought back and are now receiving care and rehabilitation in Italy, a gesture the Ukrainian leader praised as a symbol of true compassion from the Italian people.

The conversation also honored Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, a historic Ukrainian religious figure known for sheltering Jews during World War II. Zelenskyy expressed hope that Sheptytsky’s bravery and contributions to humanity would receive long-overdue international recognition.

President Zelenskyy concluded the visit by extending a personal invitation to Pope Francis to visit Ukraine, a move that would carry profound symbolic significance. Such a visit would not only uplift the spirit of a war-weary nation but also amplify the global call for peace, human dignity, and unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.
