According to World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, digital tools, when paired with the right infrastructure and policies, can transform access to opportunity, innovation, and jobs.
The World Bank is investing heavily in building the foundations for this transformation. A major focus lies in providing countries with improved digital identification systems. These digital IDs are essential not only for expanding financial inclusion but also for enabling citizens to access government benefits and private-sector services securely and efficiently.
In addition, digital cash-transfer programs are reshaping how social protection works. By delivering resources directly to individuals in need, these systems bypass bureaucratic hurdles, reduce leakages, and ensure that aid reaches the right people at the right time. This model has already proven effective in multiple regions during times of crisis, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
Modernizing payment infrastructure is another priority. A robust, transparent, and efficient payment ecosystem allows businesses to expand, entrepreneurs to innovate, and workers to participate fully in the economy. At the same time, removing outdated regulatory barriers is crucial. Without clear, forward-looking regulations, the digital economy cannot flourish at the scale needed to create sustainable growth and employment.
