Copenhagen, August , 2025 – The governments of the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) have issued a unified statement on the ongoing war in Ukraine, underlining their collective determination to continue supporting Kyiv against what they describe as “Russia’s war of aggression.”

Released by the Danish Prime Minister’s Office, the statement underscores that Ukraine’s sovereignty must remain central in any path to peace. “Only Ukraine can decide its own future. No decisions on Ukraine without Ukraine, and no decisions on Europe without Europe,” the leaders declared, stressing that no external powers have the authority to dictate terms of settlement.

The declaration also confronts the issue of trust with Moscow directly, stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown himself to be untrustworthy. The leaders condemned his “imperialist ambitions” and labeled Russia’s conduct as “flagrant breaches of international law.”

Looking ahead, the NB8 leaders called for a ceasefire coupled with concrete security guarantees from transatlantic allies. They welcomed President Donald Trump’s recent pledge that the United States would be prepared to take part in providing such assurances. Importantly, the statement asserted that Russia cannot block Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO or the European Union, rejecting any notion of Russian veto power over Ukraine’s alliances.

The humanitarian dimension of the conflict also featured prominently. The NB8 demanded the immediate return of children taken from occupied Ukrainian territories, along with the release of prisoners of war and detained civilians.

On the military and economic front, the group vowed to maintain arms deliveries to Ukraine, bolster European defense readiness, and intensify sanctions aimed at weakening Russia’s war economy.

Concluding their message, the leaders reiterated their “unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.” The declaration reflects the continued unity of the Nordic-Baltic states in backing Kyiv, reinforcing Europe’s commitment to ensure that peace comes on terms set by Ukraine itself.
