Macron Meets Lula to Strengthen Global Cooperation and Bilateral Ties

French President Emmanuel Macron recently held a high-level discussion with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, emphasizing the importance of multilateralism in addressing global challenges. The meeting, which followed a summit in Washington on Monday, highlighted shared commitments to peace, security, and sustainable development.
During the discussion, Macron reaffirmed the need to uphold multilateral frameworks as a central strategy for achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. Both leaders stressed the importance of solid security guarantees not only for Ukraine but also for broader European stability.
With the COP30 climate conference scheduled to take place in Belém at the end of 2025, the two presidents also evaluated pressing global issues, particularly environmental protection and the fight against poverty. Macron noted the urgency of coordinated international efforts to address climate change while promoting sustainable economic growth.
The meeting also touched on trade relations, with Macron expressing his readiness to pursue an ambitious EU-Mercosur agreement. He emphasized, however, that any deal must safeguard the interests of French and European agriculture while serving the broader economies of the participating regions.
Economic cooperation was a key topic, including discussions on customs tariffs and enhanced collaboration in defense and transportation sectors. Macron and Lula agreed to continue strengthening bilateral relations, building on the momentum of Macron’s state visit to Brazil and President Lula’s visit to France in June.
The encounter underscores a shared vision of global cooperation, sustainable development, and strong bilateral ties, signaling a new phase of partnership between France and Brazil on both regional and international fronts.
