San Francisco, CA — Tech billionaire and X owner Elon Musk has admitted that the platform’s recommendation algorithm is far from perfect, describing it as deeply flawed but still preferable to alternatives.

In a recent post, Musk said the company decided to make the algorithm open-source not to boast about its strengths but to highlight its shortcomings. “We’ve open sourced the X algorithm not because we think it’s smart, but to show it’s many flaws,” he wrote.

Musk explained that X engineers work continuously to refine the system, updating it weekly in an effort to improve accuracy and fairness. However, he acknowledged that progress is uneven and that updates don’t always achieve the desired results.

The Tesla and SpaceX chief compared the algorithm to democracy, quoting the famous observation that while democracy is often criticized, it remains superior to other systems. “Like democracy, it’s the worst algorithm, except for all the others,” Musk remarked.

X has positioned its algorithmic transparency alongside initiatives like Community Notes, a feature that allows users to collaboratively fact-check posts and provide additional context. Musk emphasized that both efforts reflect his commitment to openness and user-driven accountability on the platform.

Analysts say Musk’s decision to release the algorithm code publicly is unusual among major tech platforms, which typically guard such systems closely. By exposing flaws, Musk appears to be inviting scrutiny from developers and users alike in hopes of fostering trust and long-term improvements.

The move reflects his broader philosophy of “radical transparency,” a principle he has repeatedly said will shape X’s future as it seeks to become an open, user-led digital town square.
