The Government of India has dismissed viral claims circulating on social media that suggest a new Union Territory is being planned by combining districts from Bihar and West Bengal near the strategically important Siliguri Corridor.

The clarification was issued by PIB Fact Check, the official fact-checking unit that verifies information related to government policies and announcements. According to the agency, the claim spreading online is completely false and misleading.

Several posts on social media platforms had alleged that the central government was considering restructuring administrative boundaries to create a new Union Territory in the region surrounding the Siliguri Corridor. However, officials confirmed that no such proposal is currently under consideration by the government.

The Siliguri Corridor, often referred to as the “Chicken’s Neck,” is a narrow stretch of land in northern West Bengal that connects mainland India to its northeastern states. Because of its geographical and strategic importance, the region frequently becomes the subject of speculation and rumors online.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious about unverified information circulating on digital platforms. They emphasized the importance of relying only on credible and official sources for accurate updates about government decisions and policies.

The fact-checking unit also advised users to verify any suspicious news before forwarding or sharing it. Officials say spreading misinformation can create unnecessary confusion and public concern.

The government reiterated that any major administrative decision, such as the creation of a new Union Territory, would be formally announced through official channels and not through unofficial social media posts.
