Ukraine’s military intelligence leadership has warned that Russia may attempt to use rising instability in the Middle East to reduce international pressure over the war in Ukraine. According to a report presented by the head of Ukraine’s defense intelligence, officials are closely analyzing Moscow’s strategic calculations amid tensions involving Iran and ongoing U.S. military operations in the region.
Oleh Ivashchenko, Chief of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, said analysts are examining evidence suggesting that the Russian leadership could benefit from a prolonged conflict in the Middle East and the Gulf region. Ukrainian intelligence believes that such geopolitical turbulence may shift global attention away from the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Strategy to Divert Global Pressure
According to the intelligence assessment, Moscow may see extended instability in the Middle East as a way to weaken international pressure and reduce diplomatic focus on the war in Ukraine. Officials believe Russia hopes that a major regional crisis could divide the attention of Western governments and their allies.
Ukrainian analysts also suggest that the Russian government may attempt to use changing global conditions to push for the easing of sanctions, particularly those targeting the country’s energy sector. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Western countries have imposed sweeping sanctions on Russian oil, gas, banking, and technology sectors.
Energy Markets and Economic Calculations
Another key element of the assessment involves global energy markets. Ukrainian intelligence believes Russia could benefit from fluctuations in oil and gas prices caused by instability in the Middle East. Rising energy prices could potentially increase revenue for Moscow despite existing sanctions.
Officials also warned that Russian diplomatic efforts may intensify in order to convince some international partners to reconsider or soften restrictions on the country’s energy exports.
Russian Battlefield Losses
The report also referenced internal Russian military assessments allegedly obtained by Ukrainian intelligence. According to these documents, Russian reports estimate their own battlefield losses at more than 1.3 million soldiers killed or seriously wounded since the start of the conflict.
The intelligence analysis claims that Russian internal data shows a change in the ratio between killed and wounded soldiers, with 62 percent classified as killed and 38 percent wounded. Ukrainian officials believe the actual figures could be even higher than those recorded in Russian reports.
Expanding Military Cooperation
In addition, Ukrainian intelligence said it has gathered updated information regarding military cooperation between Russia and North Korea. Officials believe the partnership may involve weapons supplies, ammunition transfers, and other defense-related cooperation.
Ukrainian authorities say they will continue sharing intelligence findings with international partners and allies as part of efforts to counter Russian military capabilities and maintain international support for Ukraine.

Officials from the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine stated that intelligence agencies have been instructed to intensify monitoring of Russian military production and logistics networks.
