India’s push toward inclusive development has taken a new step with the introduction of the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), popularly known as VB-G RAM G Act, 2025. The initiative aims to strengthen livelihood security in rural areas while balancing the needs of agricultural communities.
The program, introduced under the guidance of the Ministry of Rural Development, seeks to provide a stronger employment safety net for rural households. Under the new framework, eligible workers will receive a guarantee of up to 125 days of employment in a year, an expansion designed to improve income stability and create more opportunities for rural labourers.
The policy has recently become the subject of public debate, particularly regarding the work schedule structure within the program. Some claims circulating online suggest that workers may be left without employment for long periods—up to 60 days. However, officials clarify that this interpretation is incorrect.
According to government guidelines, the provision allowing up to 60 days of paused work periods is intended to support farmers during peak agricultural seasons. During these crucial periods, rural labour demand rises sharply in farming activities such as sowing and harvesting. By temporarily pausing certain program works, states can ensure that farm operations have sufficient labour available.
Importantly, the decision on when to pause program activities rests with individual state governments. They can determine the most appropriate periods based on local agricultural calendars and labour needs. The total pause period can add up to 60 days but is not a continuous mandatory break.
Supporters of the initiative argue that the design aims to strike a balance between two important objectives: protecting rural workers’ incomes and ensuring farmers have adequate labour during critical farming periods. By guaranteeing 125 days of employment while also coordinating with agricultural cycles, the scheme attempts to address both economic security and food production needs.
The initiative is part of the broader development vision promoted by Narendra Modi under the concept of Viksit Bharat, which focuses on strengthening rural infrastructure, employment opportunities, and livelihoods across the country. The program is overseen by the Ministry of Rural Development (India) and involves coordination with state governments and local administrations.
Leaders such as Shivraj Singh Chouhan have also emphasized the importance of rural employment programs in ensuring sustainable development in villages. They argue that initiatives like VB-G RAM G can play a significant role in improving living standards while supporting India’s agricultural economy.
As the scheme moves toward implementation, policymakers and rural development experts will closely monitor how the employment guarantee works in practice. If successful, the program could become a major pillar of India’s strategy to strengthen rural livelihoods while supporting agricultural productivity.
