The Election Commission of India has announced the official schedule for upcoming assembly bye-elections across multiple states, setting the stage for voters to elect new representatives in vacant constituencies.
According to the election authority, polling in assembly constituencies of Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland, and Tripura will take place on April 9, 2026. These elections will allow voters in the affected constituencies to choose new members for their respective legislative assemblies.
In a separate phase, polling will be conducted in assembly constituencies of Gujarat and Maharashtra on April 23, 2026. The staggered voting schedule has been designed to ensure smooth election management, including security arrangements and administrative coordination.
The commission also confirmed that the counting of votes for all these bye-elections will be held on May 4, 2026, after which the final results will be officially declared.
Bye-elections are typically conducted when seats in legislative assemblies become vacant due to reasons such as resignation, disqualification, death of a sitting member, or other constitutional circumstances. These polls ensure that citizens in those constituencies continue to have representation in the legislative process.
The Election Commission is expected to issue detailed guidelines regarding nomination filing, campaigning rules, and the Model Code of Conduct, which will come into effect in the concerned constituencies once the election notification is formally released.
Political parties are now preparing to field candidates and begin campaigning in the affected constituencies, making these bye-elections an important political test ahead of future state and national elections.
