Tensions escalated in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, following violent clashes between two groups during a Durga idol immersion procession on October 13, resulting in the tragic death of a local resident and several injuries. The conflict arose when an argument over the playing of DJ music during the religious procession turned violent, leading to stone-pelting and gunfire.
Incident Overview
According to Bahraich Superintendent of Police Vrinda Shukla, the violence occurred when the Durga idol immersion procession passed through Mahsi, a sub-division of Bahraich district. What began as a verbal dispute over playing loud DJ music quickly spiraled into a violent confrontation between two groups, leading to stone-pelting. During the clash, shots were fired, and Ram Gopal Mishra, a 22-year-old local resident, was hit by a bullet. He was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Aftermath and Protest
Following the postmortem on Monday, October 14, Mishra’s body was handed over to his family. However, a large group of local residents paraded the body to Mahsi tehsil, staging a protest and demanding the death penalty for those responsible for Mishra’s murder. The protesters refused to conduct the final rites until justice was ensured.
During the protest, some of the demonstrators resorted to vandalism. Homes, shops, and vehicles were reportedly damaged, and a two-wheeler showroom in the Hardi area was set ablaze. Senior police and administrative officials rushed to the spot to calm the situation and restore peace. To prevent further escalation, barricades were erected to stop outsiders from entering the protest area.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s Response
Taking immediate cognizance of the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed strong disapproval of the violence and promised strict action against those involved. Adityanath assured the public that those who attempt to disrupt the peace in Bahraich would not be spared and emphasized maintaining law and order in the region.
Current Situation
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, and security measures have been tightened in the affected areas. As the situation remains tense, officials are urging people to stay calm and avoid further escalation of violence.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of how quickly communal tensions can flare up during religious events, and the importance of maintaining harmony and peace in such sensitive situations.
