Indian Railways has started a bold fleet expansion project in a major attempt to improve passenger experience and overhaul its offerings. The railway system has significantly upgraded its current fleet with an amazing 6,511 new general coaches added during the past five years (2019–2024).

Part of Indian Railways’ continuous attempts to modernise its offerings and meet the rising demand for effective transportation is this significant extension. Modern technologies abound among the new coaches, which feature sophisticated conveniences meant to make passengers’s trip comfortable and quick.

The new coaches have one of the most interesting characteristics: they use semi-permanent couplers, which provide jerk-free travel. The coaches also have foldable snack tables, horizontal sliding windows, and cellphone holders, therefore improving the whole trip experience.

Four Amrit Bharat Express routes run on the Indian Railways system right now, providing customers with first-rate travel. The continuous efforts of the railway to improve its offerings and give its customers improved conveniences have included these services.

New rail services—including Amrit Bharat services—are always under development depending on traffic reasons, operational viability, and resource availability. Indian Railways is dedicated to keep enhancing its offerings and building a fleet to satisfy the rising need for mobility.

Apart from the current development, Indian Railways intends to produce 10,000 non-AC coaches comprising general class and sleeper class models. This action is meant to satisfy the growing need for transport and give travellers improved facilities.

The route and frequency of operation will among other things determine the carrying capacity of these vehicles. But with these fresh carriages, Indian Railways is likely to greatly increase its passenger carrying capacity, therefore relieving travellers who frequently suffer congestion during busy travel times.

Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronic & Information Technology, made public this development in a written response to a Rajya Sabha query. The minister’s speech emphasises the government’s will to improve the transport system of the nation and give its people more conveniences.
