As a well-marked low-pressure area develops over the central regions of the south Bay of Bengal, Tamil Nadu is gearing up for a significant rainfall event. On the morning of October 15, 2024, Chennai and its neighboring districts—Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur—experienced heavy downpours, raising concerns about potential flooding and disruptions.

According to the latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather system is expected to intensify into a depression and shift towards the northern coast of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and parts of south Andhra Pradesh by October 17. This forecast has prompted officials to take immediate precautionary measures.

In response to the heavy rainfall predictions, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has instructed authorities to declare a holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts on October 15. This decision aims to ensure the safety of students and minimize the risk associated with travel during adverse weather conditions.

To assist citizens during this weather event, the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority has set up a dedicated helpline. Residents can reach out to the State Helpline at 1070 or the District Helpline at 1077 for assistance. Additionally, for inquiries related to relief centers, food supplies, or to volunteer in flood relief efforts, individuals can contact the helpline at 1913 or WhatsApp at 9445869848.

Authorities are on high alert and are working closely with local agencies to monitor the situation and provide timely updates to the public. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather conditions and follow safety guidelines to ensure their well-being during this impending weather event.

With a proactive approach to disaster management and community support systems in place, Tamil Nadu is prepared to tackle the challenges posed by the upcoming heavy rains. The focus remains on safeguarding lives and property while ensuring effective communication and support for affected communities.
