Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar underlined in a recent speech to newly appointed Rajya Sabha members the main responsibility of Parliament in preserving democracy and defending the Constitution. Emphasising the institution’s sovereignty and power, he underlined that no issue is off-limits for debate in Parliament if correct processes are followed.

Concerned about personal attacks and the “hit and run” tactic used by some members, Dhankhar urged them to have positive conversations rather. He also considered the emergency as a terrible chapter in Indian democracy when constitutional values were sacrificed.

The Vice President demanded a change of viewpoint from political to one emphasising nationalism and the general welfare of the nation. Emphasising the need of assessing the legislative system outside party boundaries, he underlined the Constituent Assembly procedures as a lighthouse for contemporary Indian democracy.

Emphasising that parliamentary independence is awarded to defend democracy and uphold the Constitution, Dhankhar also addressed issues about its abuse. He urged members to keep the dignity of procedures and closely go over parliamentary procedures.

Emphasising the importance of openness, responsibility, and creative government planning from the government, the Vice President’s speech inspired members to cooperate to enhance India’s democratic foundations. He also urged nominated members to record their contributions and underlined their important part in illuminating society.

Dhankhar further emphasised that they are not only formalities but also instruments for starting action, hence members should use Special Mentions to properly bring government attention to significant problems. He also emphasised the significance of members carefully going over minister responses and raising pertinent additional questions.

Apart from that, the Vice President voiced worries about recent disturbances in the Rajya Sabha and attacked the lack of attention paid during the motion of thanks reply to the Prime Minister. Reiterating his relentless allegiance to the Constitution, rule of law, and national interests, he angrily refuted any charges of partiality.

Dhankhar’s speech acted as a reminder of the requirement of parliamentary decorum and the necessity of honest House communication. He urged members to keep the dignity of parliamentary procedures and to consider the basic ideas of democracy.

The Vice President’s speech underlined generally the vital part Parliament plays in maintaining democracy and defending the Constitution. He exhorted members to cooperate to deepen India’s democratic roots and give the nation’s welfare top priority.
