International Reggae Day (IRD) is an annual 24-hour global celebration of Jamaican music culture.On July 1, 2024, IRD marks its 30th anniversary, spotlighting the past three decades of this iconic brand that has promoted Jamaican music and its global impact. Let’s delve into the significance, history, and festivities of International Reggae Day.

Origins and Influence: Reggae music, with its roots in Jamaica, blends African, Latin American, and rhythm and blues influences. It emerged as a powerful expression of cultural identity, social consciousness, and resistance. The genre’s heartbeat lies in the affirmation of “One Love,” originally championed by Marcus Garvey and immortalized in song by Bob Marley.

Celebrating 30 Years:

  • Riddims & Resistance: IRD2024 celebrates the resilience of reggae music. It has been a vehicle for resistance, addressing social issues, advocating for justice, and fostering unity.
  • Global Connection: Since its launch in 1994 in Kingston, the home of Jamaican music, IRD has connected reggae lovers worldwide. Media, bloggers, industry professionals, and fans come together to honor Jamaica’s rich musical legacy.
  • Tributes: On July 1, at 11:30 AM Jamaican time, media worldwide synchronize to play Bob Marley’s “One Love” followed by Dennis Brown’s “Here I Come” and “Reggae Bring Back Love” in honor of Peetah Morgan from IRD Ambassadors Morgan Heritage. Fans use hashtags #OneLove and #IRDPullUp to share messages of love and hope.

Global Media Festival: Media partners from Jamaica, the Bahamas, Brazil, Colombia, South Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom curate special programming for IRD. It’s a 24-hour celebration of Jamaica’s music, lifestyle, and culture, hosted by Kingston—UNESCO’s Creative Music City and the heart of Jamaican music.
