Reincarnation is an Indian theory in which the belief of rebirth after birth and death of the soul has been established. According to this theory, death of the body is not the end of life, but there is a series of births and rebirths. The soul takes birth in 84 lakh or 84 lakh types of species and suffers the consequences of its deeds. After self-realization, the series of births stops, but the soul also takes birth with the noble intention of self-determination, public service, and liberating worldly beings. The incarnations of God have also been described in these texts. Various incidents of rebirth are also mentioned in the Puranas.

According to Vedas, Smritis and Puranas, the description of the soul’s movement and its reaching any loka varies. Here are some important points:

Vaikunth Loka: This is the spiritual loka of Lord Vishnu, where the soul attains salvation and infinite bliss. Here the soul becomes free from worldly bondages.

Upward movement: This is the upward movement of the soul in which it takes birth in the gods or divine lokas.

Sthira Gati: This is the stable movement of the soul in which it takes birth in human or ancestral lokas.

Dhogati: This is the downward movement of the soul in which it takes birth in animals or hellish lokas.

Thus, the movement of the soul is determined based on its karma.
