Different Types of Meteorites

Scientists generally classify meteorites into three major groups:

  • Iron meteorites, made primarily of iron and nickel, known for their exceptional density.
  • Stony-iron meteorites, a rare combination of metallic and rocky materials that offer insights into the interiors of ancient asteroids.

Can You Find One?

Meteorites can be found almost anywhere, from deserts and forests to Antarctica, where the dark rocks stand out against the ice. Genuine meteorites are usually heavier than ordinary rocks, often contain metallic iron, and may display a dark fusion crust formed during atmospheric entry.

However, many Earth rocks resemble meteorites, so experts use laboratory analysis to confirm whether a specimen truly came from space.
