Ukraine and Bahrain Highlight Growing Partnership as King Hamad Congratulates Kyiv on Independence Day

Ukraine has welcomed congratulations from Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on the country’s Independence Day, describing the gesture as a sign of friendship and continued solidarity between the two nations.

The message comes as Ukraine marks the 35th anniversary of the restoration of its independence, with leaders from more than 100 countries, governments and international organisations sending greetings to the Ukrainian people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly thanked the leaders for their messages and support.

Among those extending congratulations was King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, whose message was welcomed by the Ukrainian leadership as another indication of the developing relationship between Kyiv and Manama.

Zelenskyy briefed the Bahraini monarch on the situation in Ukraine and Kyiv’s diplomatic efforts to achieve a lasting and dignified peace. The talks also explored opportunities for cooperation in security and defence.

Ukraine also offered to share its experience in dealing with missile and drone attacks, while the two sides agreed that their teams would examine possible cooperation, including a proposed drone agreement.

Economic and Agricultural Ties on the Agenda

The relationship is not limited to security matters.

Ukraine and Bahrain have also discussed expanding economic cooperation and developing ties in the agricultural sector. Agriculture is an area where Ukraine has traditionally held significant international importance because of its role in global grain and food markets.

During the leaders’ May meeting, the possibility of opening embassies in both countries was also discussed, along with the potential introduction of a visa-free arrangement.

Such measures could improve diplomatic communication, facilitate travel and create additional opportunities for businesses and institutions in both countries.

The latest Independence Day exchange takes place against the backdrop of Ukraine’s wider diplomatic campaign to maintain international support.

On August 26, Zelenskyy said he had personally thanked more than 100 leaders of foreign countries, governments and international organisations for their congratulations on Ukraine’s Independence Day.

Ukraine has repeatedly emphasised the importance of maintaining international partnerships while continuing diplomatic efforts surrounding the war and the country’s future security.

The country’s Independence Day celebrations therefore provided another opportunity for Kyiv to recognise international partners and reinforce diplomatic relationships.

Bahrain-Ukraine Relations Continue to Develop

The recent contacts between the two countries suggest that Bahrain-Ukraine relations are moving into a broader phase.

Earlier in March, Zelenskyy and King Hamad held a telephone conversation focused on security challenges in Bahrain and the wider region. The discussion included possible cooperation in responding to missile and drone threats, with both sides agreeing to maintain contact between their teams.

Two months later, their face-to-face meeting in Manama expanded the conversation to include security, economic relations, agriculture, diplomatic representation and travel.

The latest Independence Day message from Bahrain has added another diplomatic layer to a relationship that has been gaining momentum.

For Ukraine, support from countries outside its traditional European and North American partners is strategically important.
