The incident began late on August 31 while members of the Eldorado Park Crime Prevention team and Gauteng Traffic Wardens were carrying out crime-prevention duties in the area.

At approximately 10 p.m., officers reportedly heard several gunshots coming from the vicinity of Heatherlands Street in Eldorado Park Extension 4.

As police moved toward the area, they allegedly spotted a blue Toyota Cross SUV travelling at high speed. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle using their emergency lights and siren, but the driver allegedly failed to pull over.

A pursuit followed through the area and continued for several minutes before police managed to stop the vehicle on Pennsylvania Street in Eldorado Park Extension 7.

Officers then searched the driver. Police allege that they discovered a 9mm Canik pistol and two magazines in his possession.

One of the magazines was reportedly empty, while the second contained a live round. The man allegedly could not provide a firearm licence or documentation authorising him to possess the weapon.

Police arrested the suspect and seized the firearm and ammunition for further investigation.

A case involving possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition has been opened. The suspect was expected to appear before the Protea Magistrate’s Court on September 2.

Investigators are also expected to examine whether the firearm may be connected to the gunshots reported shortly before the pursuit.

Authorities have appealed to residents with information about illegal firearms or criminal activity in Eldorado Park to assist the investigation.

The suspect remains subject to the legal process, and the allegations against him have not been proven in court.
