New Environmental Authority Gives Green Light to Saraji Mine Extension
CANBERRA: Australia’s newly established national environmental regulator has approved a major expansion of the Saraji open-cut coal mine in Queensland, allowing the operation to continue until 2055.

The project, operated by the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, is expected to produce an additional 55 million tonnes of coal over the extended operating period. The approval makes the Saraji development the first coal project cleared by the new National Environmental Protection Agency since the agency began operating in July.
The decision has immediately drawn criticism from environmental organizations, which have questioned whether continued coal development is compatible with Australia’s climate objectives.
The approved expansion will affect areas containing habitat used by several threatened species. The regulator has attached environmental conditions intended to reduce and manage potential impacts on wildlife and surrounding ecosystems.
Supporters of the project point to its role in Queensland’s resources industry and the importance of coal exports to regional economic activity. The mine also supplies coal used in steel production, rather than being primarily associated with electricity generation.
Environmental campaigners, however, argue that extending the life of a large fossil-fuel operation creates a contradiction between resource development and efforts to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
The approval also comes amid increased discussion between Australia and Pacific nations over climate change. Several Pacific countries have repeatedly called on major fossil-fuel producers to accelerate the transition toward lower-emission energy sources.
The Saraji decision is therefore likely to remain part of Australia’s wider debate over how the country balances mining, regional employment, export earnings and environmental commitments.
The project will now proceed under the conditions attached to the environmental approval, with monitoring and compliance requirements forming part of its long-term operation.
Key Point
The approval allows the Queensland mine to continue operating until 2055 and authorizes an additional 55 million tonnes of coal production, making it a significant test of Australia’s approach to resource development and environmental protection.
