SEOUL — South Korea has already surpassed its previous full-year export record, powered by an extraordinary surge in semiconductor shipments as global demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure continues to reshape international trade.

The country’s cumulative exports have reached approximately $709.4 billion, exceeding the previous annual record of $709.3 billion set last year. The milestone was reached remarkably early in the year, highlighting the strength of South Korea’s technology-driven export economy.

Semiconductor Demand Drives the Surge

Semiconductors have emerged as the central engine behind the export boom.

During the first eight months of the year, South Korea’s semiconductor exports jumped 169.6% from a year earlier, according to government data. Chips now account for roughly 40.6% of the country’s total exports, reflecting the enormous increase in demand associated with artificial intelligence computing and data-center investment.

The expansion has benefited major South Korean technology companies and the country’s wider electronics supply chain. Demand for advanced memory and other components has risen as technology companies around the world invest heavily in AI servers and computing infrastructure.

South Korea’s export performance has therefore become closely linked to the global AI investment cycle.

$1 Trillion Target Comes Into View

The latest figures have raised expectations that South Korea could cross an even larger milestone: $1 trillion in annual exports.

Officials cited by Korean media estimate that the country could reach that level around early December if the current pace continues. Only a small group of economies, including the United States, China and Germany, have previously recorded annual exports above the trillion-dollar threshold.

Reaching that level would represent a major achievement for an economy whose growth depends heavily on international trade.

The export acceleration is also occurring despite considerable uncertainty in the global economy, including geopolitical tensions, changing supply chains and increased protectionism.

Growth Extends Beyond Chips

Although semiconductors are leading the expansion, South Korea’s export gains are not limited to the chip industry.

Government data show stronger shipments in several other categories, including computer equipment, petroleum products, wireless communications equipment and ships. Exports to major markets have also remained strong, helping broaden the impact of the trade expansion.

The performance suggests that South Korea’s industrial base is benefiting from a combination of technology demand and stronger international orders across several manufacturing sectors.

Economic Outlook Strengthens

The export boom is also influencing expectations for the broader South Korean economy.

The Bank of Korea has raised its 2026 growth forecast to 3.3%, citing strong semiconductor exports and continued demand connected with AI infrastructure.

For policymakers, stronger exports could provide important support for economic growth at a time when global trade conditions remain uncertain.

However, the heavy dependence on semiconductors also creates a potential vulnerability. If global investment in AI infrastructure slows or chip prices weaken sharply, South Korea’s export momentum could face pressure.

A Major Milestone for Korean Industry

The new export record nevertheless demonstrates the transformation of South Korea’s position in global manufacturing.

The country has evolved from an export economy dependent on traditional industrial products into a major supplier of some of the world’s most strategically important technologies.

From memory chips and communications equipment to automobiles, ships and advanced industrial products, Korean manufacturers now occupy critical positions in international supply chains.

The latest figures underline how rapidly the global AI boom is changing those supply chains.

If current momentum continues, South Korea could move from breaking its annual export record to reaching the $1 trillion export milestone within the same year, giving the country’s technology and manufacturing sectors an even greater role in global trade.
