Bhubaneswar: Odisha paid homage to two influential figures in India’s history, freedom fighter and young martyr Baji Rout and political leader Jayaprakash Narayan, through separate commemorative programmes in the state capital. The ceremonies brought together public representatives, officials and social figures to reflect on their contributions to the country’s struggle for freedom, democratic values and social change.

Although their lives unfolded in different historical circumstances, both personalities became associated with resistance against injustice. Baji Rout is remembered for his extraordinary bravery as a young freedom fighter, while Jayaprakash Narayan earned a lasting place in modern Indian political history through his commitment to social reform and democratic accountability.
Baji Rout Remembered for His Extraordinary Sacrifice
A commemorative programme marking the martyrdom anniversary of Baji Rout was organised near the Odisha Legislative Assembly in Bhubaneswar. The event was jointly organised by the Information and Public Relations Department and the Shaheed Baji Rout Memorial Foundation.
Odisha Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy joined representatives of the foundation, officials and other distinguished personalities in paying floral tributes at the martyr’s statue. Those present included foundation president Dr. Krushna Chandra Aich, secretary Kishore Kumar Mishra, Pujyapuja Sansad president Pradyumna Satpathy, Girija Shankar Mahapatra and Information and Public Relations Department Joint Director Sucheta Priyadarshini.

The gathering remembered the courage of Baji Rout, who became a symbol of resistance against British colonial authority despite his young age. His story continues to hold a prominent place in Odisha’s collective memory because of the determination he displayed during the freedom movement.
Rout was only 12 years old when he was killed in 1938. His martyrdom transformed the young boy into an enduring emblem of sacrifice, inspiring generations to reflect on the role ordinary people, including children, played in India’s struggle against colonial rule.
His legacy is particularly significant in Odisha, where his name remains closely associated with the history of popular resistance and the participation of young people in the movement for independence.
A separate floral tribute was also held at his statue near DAV School Square in Unit-8, Bhubaneswar. The observance at another prominent location in the city provided an additional opportunity to remember his contribution and reaffirm the importance of preserving the memory of freedom fighters.
Jayaprakash Narayan’s Ideals Recalled on His Birth Anniversary
The Information and Public Relations Department also organised a commemorative programme at Master Canteen Square in Bhubaneswar to mark the birth anniversary of Jayaprakash Narayan, widely known as Lok Nayak.
Departmental officials and several distinguished personalities gathered at his statue and offered floral tributes. The participants recalled his role in the independence movement and his subsequent efforts to promote social justice, political reform and democratic principles.
Jayaprakash Narayan was among the prominent leaders whose political journey extended beyond the struggle against British rule. He became associated with socialist thought and the pursuit of a more equitable society, advocating changes intended to address inequality and the misuse of public power.

His influence became particularly visible during the Total Revolution movement, which called for comprehensive transformation across political, social and public life. The movement attracted considerable participation from young people and became an important chapter in India’s post-independence political history.
Narayan’s leadership during this period helped establish him as a major voice for democratic accountability. His political legacy continues to be discussed in connection with civil liberties, responsible governance and citizens’ participation in public affairs.
The tribute ceremony provided an occasion to revisit these ideals and recognise the lasting impact of his contribution to Indian democracy.
Two Legacies Linked by Resistance to Injustice
The programmes honouring Baji Rout and Jayaprakash Narayan highlighted two distinct chapters of India’s political development.
Rout’s story belongs to the era of colonial resistance, when people across the country challenged British authority and worked towards independence. His sacrifice illustrates the courage displayed by individuals who stood against oppression even when confronted with grave personal danger.
Narayan’s public life, meanwhile, reflected the continuing importance of political and social reform after independence. His advocacy of democratic participation and systemic change demonstrated that the pursuit of justice did not end with the departure of colonial rule.

Remembering both figures offers an opportunity to understand freedom as more than a historical achievement. Their lives also invite reflection on civic responsibility, public integrity and the need to challenge injustice.
Through the ceremonies in Bhubaneswar, Odisha honoured a young martyr whose bravery became part of the state’s freedom movement heritage and a national leader whose ideas influenced India’s democratic discourse. The floral tributes served as a reminder that the contributions of historical figures remain relevant when their values are carried forward through public life and collective responsibility.
