US Ambassador to Greece Announces Departure, Defends Record and Denies Allegations
The United States Ambassador to Greece has reflected on his diplomatic tenure, highlighting energy cooperation, defence ties and economic partnerships between Washington and Athens, while firmly denying recent allegations against him.

In a statement outlining his record in office, the ambassador expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for entrusting him with the responsibility of representing the United States in Greece. He described the position as the honour of a lifetime and said his work had focused on advancing the administration’s America First agenda while strengthening relations with Greece.
Among the key achievements highlighted in the statement were efforts to expand American liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to Europe, advance the Vertical Gas Corridor and strengthen defence and security cooperation with Greece, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The ambassador also pointed to initiatives intended to expand opportunities for American businesses and investment across Southeast Europe. He said the embassy had worked to promote US energy exports, deepen economic cooperation and maintain Washington’s strategic engagement in the region.
Energy Cooperation at the Centre of US-Greece Relations
Energy has become an important area of cooperation between the United States and European countries seeking to diversify their supplies. American LNG exports can provide European markets with an alternative source of natural gas, while regional infrastructure projects aim to improve the movement of energy between countries.
The Vertical Gas Corridor is intended to facilitate gas flows through interconnected infrastructure in southeastern and eastern Europe. Its broader strategic significance lies in efforts to diversify supply routes and reduce dependence on Russian energy.
The ambassador presented these initiatives as important accomplishments of his tenure, alongside cooperation on defence, security and commercial investment. The statement did not independently establish the final financial value or implementation status of the agreements mentioned.
Ambassador Denies Allegations as White House Seeks Her Departure
The statement comes amid controversy surrounding Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle, whose conduct has faced scrutiny following media reports alleging improper financial requests and the use of diplomatic connections for personal or private interests. On October 13, 2026, the White House confirmed that it had asked Guilfoyle to resign from her position.
Guilfoyle has denied wrongdoing and said she intends to defend her name, reputation and integrity. Her lawyers have disputed allegations concerning a reported $100,000 payment request, arguing that the money related to previously agreed payments for public appearances and speaking engagements. The claims remain contested.
Reports have also indicated that the State Department’s inspector general was reviewing concerns related to her conduct. The scope and outcome of any inquiry will be important in determining whether further action is warranted.
Despite the controversy, Guilfoyle reaffirmed her support for Trump and Rubio in her departure statement. She also thanked the people of Greece for their hospitality and cooperation during her diplomatic service.
Her departure marks a significant development in the US diplomatic mission in Athens, where energy security, NATO cooperation and economic ties remain important elements of the relationship between the two countries.
