Dakar 2026: Senegal Set to Make Olympic History as Youth Games Open in Africa
Landmark Sporting Event Begins in Senegal
DAKAR, October 31, 2026 — Senegal is preparing to welcome the world’s emerging sporting talent as the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games begin, marking the first time an Olympic sporting event has been hosted on African soil.

The Games will run from October 31 to November 13, bringing together approximately 2,700 young athletes from around the world. Competitions will take place across three host locations: Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly.
The event represents a major milestone for African sport, offering the continent an opportunity to showcase its sporting infrastructure, cultural diversity and ability to organise an international multi-sport competition.
Athletes to Compete Across 25 Sports
The programme features 25 competition sports and 153 medal events. The disciplines include athletics, swimming, basketball 3×3, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, judo, rugby sevens, skateboarding, table tennis and wrestling.
Several sports are expected to attract particular attention because of their regional significance. Beach wrestling, for example, reflects Senegal’s strong traditional connection with wrestling, while Baseball5 and Wushu add variety to the international programme.
The International Olympic Committee has designed the competition to achieve full gender balance, with equal participation opportunities for young women and men across the sporting programme.
Opening Ceremony to Celebrate African Culture
The opening ceremony is scheduled for October 31 at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio. It is expected to highlight Senegalese hospitality, African cultural traditions and the Olympic values of friendship, respect and excellence.
Organisers have also emphasised that Dakar 2026 is intended to deliver benefits beyond the sporting competitions. The event has been supported by thousands of volunteers and youth-focused programmes designed to encourage participation in sport and civic activities.
An important feature of this edition is the participation of a Refugee Olympic Team, underlining the Games’ message of inclusion and international solidarity.
A New Chapter for African Sport
The hosting of the Youth Olympic Games is being viewed as a significant opportunity for Senegal and the wider African continent. Beyond medals and sporting records, the event could help strengthen local sports development, improve organisational expertise and inspire a new generation of athletes.
However, the long-term impact will depend on how effectively the country maintains its facilities, develops sporting programmes and converts the international attention into lasting opportunities for young people.
As Dakar welcomes athletes from across the world, the 2026 Youth Olympic Games open a new chapter in the continent’s relationship with global sporting events.
