Dominica to Honour PM Narendra Modi with Nation’s Highest Award for COVID-19 Support and Bilateral Partnership
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be awarded Dominica’s highest honor, the Dominica Award of Honour, in acknowledgment of his role in supporting the Caribbean nation during the COVID-19 pandemic and advancing India-Dominica relations. The award will be presented by Dominica’s President, Sylvanie Burton, at the upcoming India-CARICOM Summit in Georgetown, Guyana, from November 19 to 21, 2024.
This recognition reflects Dominica’s appreciation for India’s assistance in February 2021, when 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine were sent to Dominica. This support helped Dominica not only safeguard its own citizens but also share resources with its Caribbean neighbors, showcasing India’s commitment to regional cooperation.
Beyond pandemic aid, the award acknowledges India’s collaborative work with Dominica in healthcare, education, and technology under Modi’s leadership, as well as his focus on climate resilience and sustainable development initiatives—important issues for Caribbean nations. Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit praised Modi’s dedication to the region, describing him as a “trusted ally” who stood by Dominica during challenging times.
The award underlines the strengthening of ties between India and Dominica, with both nations committed to a shared vision of progress and mutual support, particularly in areas vital to smaller, vulnerable countries.
