Ottawa, June 2025 – Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his longtime friend and former colleague, John McCallum. In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Trudeau recalled McCallum’s extensive public service career and his vital contributions to Canada’s political and academic landscape.

John McCallum, a respected academic, economist, and veteran politician, served Canadians for decades in multiple capacities. Trudeau highlighted McCallum’s early academic roots, noting that he was once the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at McGill University. His transition from academia to politics saw him become an influential Member of Parliament and minister over nearly twenty years.

“John helped our country navigate some of its most challenging times,” Trudeau wrote, reflecting on McCallum’s tenure in government. He credited McCallum for his instrumental role during Trudeau’s early days as Prime Minister, particularly in leading the rapid resettlement of tens of thousands of Syrian refugees into Canada.

Despite numerous challenges, McCallum ensured the resettlement effort was effective and humane, managing the situation during an unpredictable and turbulent time. Trudeau emphasized that this achievement stands as a testament to McCallum’s leadership, compassion, and unwavering dedication to Canada’s values.

“I will never forget how, as a minister, he helped me steer our new government through one of its first major humanitarian efforts,” Trudeau said.

Offering his condolences, the Prime Minister extended his thoughts to McCallum’s family and his many friends across the country. “I am thinking of his loved ones during this difficult time,” he concluded.

John McCallum leaves behind a legacy of service, intellect, and kindness that will be remembered by Canadians for generations to come.
