In a remarkable revelation from the World Population Review, the latest global rankings for the Top 10 Largest Employers in the World (2024) highlight the scale and influence of both government institutions and corporate giants. At the very top of this list is India’s Ministry of Defence, employing a staggering 2.99 million people, surpassing its global counterparts in military and civil services alike.

Close behind is the United States Department of Defense, with 2.93 million employees, followed by China’s People’s Liberation Army, which holds third place with 2.55 million personnel. These numbers underscore the continued dominance of military and defense sectors in terms of global employment.

In the private sector, Walmart retains its status as the largest private employer in the world, with 2.3 million employees. The American retail giant is followed by Amazon, which employs 1.61 million people across its logistics, tech, and retail operations globally. These figures reflect the massive operational scales and global footprints of U.S.-based multinational corporations.

From China, PetroChina, a major state-owned oil and gas corporation, stands sixth on the list with 1.45 million employees. In the UK, the National Health Service (NHS) is the seventh largest employer, providing jobs to 1.38 million health workers, showcasing the enormous workforce behind a nationalized healthcare system.

Taiwan’s Foxconn, known for manufacturing electronics for global brands including Apple, employs 1.29 million people, ranking eighth. Meanwhile, Indian Railways, a major public sector entity in India, is ninth with 1.21 million workers.

Closing out the top ten is Tata Group, the only Indian private sector conglomerate on the list, employing over 1.02 million people across its diverse operations ranging from steel and automobiles to IT services.

These rankings not only reflect the operational size of organizations but also underscore the critical roles they play in national economies and employment. India’s strong presence with three entries—two public and one private—demonstrates its growing economic scale and workforce engagement in both public service and corporate sectors.
