According to media reports, Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu has accepted the invitation to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be held in New Delhi on June 9. Maldives news portal Edition.mv quoted its sister publication Mihaaru News in Dhivehi as saying that President Muizzu will leave for New Delhi on Saturday for the ceremony along with several other senior government officials.Relations between India and Maldives have always been full of ups and downs. In history, while on the one hand India has provided economic and strategic assistance to Maldives, on the other hand political and geopolitical differences have also emerged.In recent years, relations between India and Maldives have taken a new turn. In January 2024, Maldives demanded India to withdraw Indian troops present in their country1. This demand was made under the ‘India Out’ campaign of Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu, which promised to reduce Indian influence.In addition, Maldives has further strengthened its relations with China. President Muizzu promoted a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership with China during his visit to China1.
