Rahul Gandhi Slams Amit Shah Over Manipur Violence, Calls for Restoration of Peace
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday criticized Home Minister Amit Shah over the ongoing crisis in Manipur, calling for the restoration of peace in the northeastern state. Speaking at a press conference, Gandhi accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of fueling division and spreading hatred, which he claimed was exacerbating the violence in the region.
Addressing reporters, Rahul Gandhi pointed out that despite the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not visited the state. “Everyone knows the situation in Manipur. The Prime Minister has not yet gone there, but I have been to Manipur. We have urged the government to stop the violence,” Gandhi said. He implied that there were vested interests behind the unrest and that the Home Minister was failing in his duties.
The Congress leader emphasized that only the Congress could calm the fire of hatred and violence in the region. “BJP people spread hatred, and that is why ‘fire’ ignites. Only Congress can extinguish this fire because we promote love and brotherhood,” Gandhi added.
The volatile situation in Manipur has led to curfews in the capital districts of Imphal West and Imphal East. To maintain public order, internet services have been suspended in seven districts. Since May of the previous year, the state has been grappling with ethnic violence that has left deep scars on its communities.
Gandhi’s remarks came as part of his ongoing criticism of the BJP-led central government’s handling of various issues. His statements underline the growing political divide over the handling of the situation in Manipur, with Congress presenting itself as a peace advocate in contrast to the BJP’s approach.
