On September 19-21, 2024, India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, H.E. Mr. Hardeep S. Puri, embarked on an official visit to Brazil at the invitation of the Brazilian Minister of Mines and Energy, H.E. Mr. Alexandre Silveira. This significant diplomatic engagement aimed to enhance collaboration in the energy sector, marking a pivotal moment in India-Brazil relations.

Review of Existing Collaboration

During the visit, both nations evaluated their current cooperation in the energy sector, which includes Indian investments in Brazil’s upstream oil and gas operations and the growing bilateral trade. The discussions emphasized the importance of sustainable fuels, particularly biofuels, as integral to both countries’ energy strategies.

Brazil has emerged as a crucial investment destination for Indian oil and gas companies, recognized for its vast resources and potential. The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to exploring new avenues for Indian investments in Brazil, including opportunities in producing assets, highlighting the complementary nature of their economies.

Commitment to Biofuels and Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)

As founding members of the Global Biofuels Alliance, India and Brazil underscored the significant role that biofuels play in the global energy transition. Both countries, as leading producers, are strategically positioned to collaborate on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). Despite SAF accounting for only 0.3% of current aviation fuel use, its potential for decarbonization is immense.

The discussions recognized the need for joint action to overcome hurdles in SAF production, such as feedstock challenges and the high costs compared to conventional fuels. Establishing consistent international standards was deemed essential for fostering investment in SAF production, reinforcing a technological-neutral approach to various production pathways.

Advancing Clean Cooking Initiatives

Looking forward, both sides expressed enthusiasm about co-hosting the India-Brazil Clean Cooking Ministerial Meeting during the India Energy Week in February 2025. This event aims to explore collaborative pathways for enhancing global access to clean cooking solutions, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable energy practices.

Strategic Partnership in Critical Minerals

Another focal point of the discussions was the cooperation in critical minerals and their value chains. The increasing demand for these resources, vital for renewable energy technologies, signifies a strategic partnership that aligns with both nations’ sustainable development goals.

Conclusion: A Vision for the Future

The joint statement released after the meetings highlighted a comprehensive partnership that represents a milestone in India-Brazil relations. By combining their resources and expertise, both countries are set to lead the global transition towards lower-emission aviation and renewable energy solutions. This collaboration not only addresses pressing environmental challenges but also opens new avenues for economic and technological advancement in the energy sector.

As India and Brazil embark on this collaborative journey, they reaffirm their commitment to sustainable development, economic growth, and the pursuit of cleaner energy alternatives, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future for both nations and the world.
