United Kingdom: British Forces Complete Arctic Operation With NATO Allies
The United Kingdom has completed a multinational Arctic operation involving British, Norwegian and American forces on the remote Norwegian island of Jan Mayen, highlighting NATO’s growing focus on security and operational readiness in the High North.

The UK Ministry of Defence published details of the operation on 6 September 2026, confirming that Royal Marine Commandos and Royal Air Force personnel had worked alongside Norwegian and U.S. forces during Operation Atlantic City.
The operation formed part of Arctic Sentry, NATO’s enhanced vigilance activity for the High North. British personnel deployed between August 26 and September 4, working with allied forces in an environment characterised by extreme weather and difficult terrain.
During the exercise, the participating forces integrated sensor and communications systems while practising how different military units could operate together in the challenging Arctic environment.
Jan Mayen occupies an important geographical position in the Norwegian Sea, north of the Greenland-Iceland-UK gap. The region is strategically significant for the security of northern Europe and wider Euro-Atlantic defence planning.
For Britain, the deployment demonstrates its continued commitment to NATO’s collective security arrangements and its ability to operate with partner nations in demanding conditions.
The exercise also underlines the increasing importance of Arctic preparedness as NATO countries strengthen their ability to monitor and respond to potential security challenges in the northern region.
