India: Government Unveils Major Development Programme as PM Begins Gujarat and Maharashtra Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Gujarat and Maharashtra on September 8, 2026, with a wide-ranging programme focused on infrastructure, transport connectivity, railways, highways and financial technology. The visit includes development projects with a combined value exceeding ₹35,000 crore in Vadodara.

One of the major highlights will be the dedication of three important sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor to the nation. The completion of these sections is expected to strengthen freight movement and improve the efficiency of India’s logistics network.
During his Gujarat programme, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to lay foundation stones for three railway projects and three highway projects. These initiatives are part of the government’s broader effort to expand transport infrastructure and improve regional connectivity.
The Maharashtra leg of the visit will focus on the country’s rapidly developing financial-technology ecosystem. Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai, whose theme is centred on agentic artificial intelligence, tokenisation and quantum technologies, alongside trusted and connected financial systems.
The government says the projects and programmes planned during the visit underline its focus on long-term infrastructure development and stronger economic connectivity. The combination of freight-corridor expansion, new transport projects and fintech initiatives also reflects the growing importance of physical and digital infrastructure in India’s development strategy.
The official announcement was issued by the Press Information Bureau on September 7, ahead of the Prime Minister’s scheduled September 8 programme.
