Argentina: Inflation Eases to 1.7% in August as Milei Government Faces Economic Pressure

Argentina recorded a 1.7% monthly inflation rate in August, the lowest monthly figure in 14 months, according to data from the country’s statistics agency INDEC. Annual inflation stood at around 33.5%, while cumulative inflation during the first eight months of 2026 reached 21.3%.

President Javier Milei welcomed the latest figures, highlighting the government’s efforts to bring inflation under control. The slowdown represents a substantial improvement from the extremely high inflation levels Argentina experienced in previous years.

However, the latest figures also show that the country continues to face significant economic challenges. Prices for housing and basic services, education and healthcare increased during August, while clothing and footwear prices declined amid greater access to imported products.

At the same time, Argentina is preparing for the next review of its agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). An IMF mission is expected to arrive in Buenos Aires during the week of September 21 to examine fiscal performance and foreign-exchange reserves.

Argentina’s central bank has reported that economic activity reached a record level during the first quarter of 2026, while poverty and unemployment indicators have improved compared with their recent peaks. However, formal private-sector employment remains under pressure.

The government therefore faces a delicate balancing act: maintaining its progress on inflation and fiscal stability while improving household purchasing power and supporting employment and economic growth.
