Italy: Four Arrested Over Violent Home Robbery in Rome

Rome, September Italian authorities have arrested four people in connection with a violent home robbery that took place in Rome’s Monti district in February 2024. The arrests followed a lengthy investigation by the Carabinieri of Rome Piazza Dante, coordinated by the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office.

According to investigators, the suspects are a 34-year-old and a 69-year-old from Rome, a 46-year-old foreign national, and a 38-year-old foreign national. They are under investigation on suspicion of aggravated home robbery and illegal possession or carrying of a firearm.

Couple Allegedly Tied Up During Robbery

The case dates back to February 2024, when three masked individuals allegedly entered a home in the Monti area while two residents were inside.

Investigators say the victims were restrained using plastic cable ties around their wrists, while adhesive tape was reportedly used around their eyes and ankles. One of the alleged robbers was armed with a pistol.

The suspects allegedly stole valuable jewellery estimated to be worth around €100,000, along with several electronic devices. Investigators also allege that the victims were threatened with serious physical harm during the robbery.

Stolen Phone Became a Major Lead

A key breakthrough reportedly came the day after the robbery.

According to the Carabinieri, the location signal of one of the stolen phones led investigators to a scooter allegedly being used by one of the suspects. Officers recovered the smartphone and subjected it to forensic examination.

Investigators subsequently analysed digital information from the device and carried out further technical surveillance. The evidence allegedly helped authorities reconstruct the suspected roles of the people involved in the robbery.

One Suspect Allegedly Acted as a “Base”

Investigators believe one of the four suspects may have acted as a “base” or inside contact, allegedly providing logistical information about the targeted residence.

The other three are suspected of being the people who physically entered the home during the robbery. Authorities say the investigation has produced serious indications against all four suspects, but the allegations remain subject to the judicial process.

Cash, Cheques and Gemstones Seized

Police carried out searches at properties connected to the suspects when the arrests were executed.

According to the Carabinieri, officers recovered more than €18,000 in cash, a notebook containing what investigators believe may be records of debts, and 62 cheques worth more than €230,000 in total.

Authorities also seized approximately 30 green stones believed to be emeralds and an electronic device used for checking diamonds. The items are now part of the investigation.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

The operation is part of the Rome Carabinieri’s wider efforts against serious property crimes and violent urban crime.

Authorities are continuing to examine the evidence and the alleged roles of the four suspects. Because the case remains at the preliminary-investigation stage, the suspects must be considered innocent until a final court judgment establishes their guilt.
