Mexico: Government Intensifies Security Operations Against Sinaloa Cartel
Mexico has deployed thousands of troops to Sinaloa, a key stronghold of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, following a series of attacks that included the killing of police officers. The military deployment represents a major escalation in the government’s efforts to contain organized crime in the region.
The operation comes as security forces face continued challenges from heavily armed criminal groups operating across Sinaloa. Authorities are increasing military and federal security presence in areas considered particularly vulnerable to cartel activity.
Mexico’s government has also reported a series of recent operations across multiple states, including arrests, weapons seizures and major drug seizures. Official security data show coordinated actions in Sinaloa and other regions as part of the country’s national security strategy.
In one operation in Sinaloa, authorities arrested a person transporting 22 kilograms of methamphetamine on a passenger bus. Security forces have also carried out operations against clandestine laboratories and facilities used in the production of synthetic drugs.
The government says its security strategy combines intelligence and investigations with federal security operations and coordination with state authorities. The latest measures demonstrate the continuing priority given to combating organized crime and drug trafficking.
Mexico is simultaneously focusing on economic stability. Its draft 2027 budget projects economic growth of 1.5% to 2.5% and a reduction in the broader public-sector deficit to 3.9% of GDP.
The security situation in Sinaloa will remain an important test for President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration as it seeks to reduce violence while strengthening federal control over areas affected by organized crime.
